The Milinda Project First Responder Award: Winner Jesse Young

Penn East FCU launched the Milinda Project in April 2024 to honor the legacy of Milinda Catalano, a beloved employee who passed unexpectedly in February 2024. The project was created to support causes close to her heart, beginning with a fundraising initiative that raised $4,000 for local no-kill animal shelters.

To further celebrate Milinda’s legacy, the next phase of the project focused on honoring first responders, a cause deeply meaningful to her and her late husband, Gus Catalano, who was a dedicated paramedic. On December 2, Penn East opened nominations for the Milinda Project First Responder Award, a $2,500 award recognizing one outstanding first responder in our community.

Recognizing Our First Responder Heroes

Penn East received 38 nominations across Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, and Wyoming counties, each highlighting the dedication, sacrifice, and heroism of the men and women who serve our communities. After careful review, the nominees were narrowed down to a top 10, and the final selection was made through a Senior Staff vote.

We are honored to announce the recipient of the first-ever Milinda Project First Responder Award:

Jesse Young – 2024 Award Recipient

Jesse Young our winner with trophy

Jesse Young is a paramedic with PA Ambulance, serving Lackawanna County. He has been a first responder for 21 years, beginning as a junior firefighter at 16 years old. He earned his EMT certification in 2008 and became a paramedic in 2013. His commitment to serving others and providing critical care in high-pressure situations embodies the spirit of this award.

Beyond his dedication to emergency services, Jesse is a proud husband and father of two young boys, balancing the demands of his career with his devotion to his family.

A Mother’s Pride: Jesse’s Nomination Story

Jesse’s nomination was submitted by his mother, Lynette, who shared the profound impact he has had on his community:

“He has spent his entire career making a difference for total strangers of all ages. He has held the hands of those in need, offered comfort during their darkest hours, and been a source of strength for colleagues after difficult calls…”

“First responders rarely get the recognition they deserve. Jesse never asks for the spotlight, but his dedication and compassion make him truly deserving of this honor.”

Jesse’s Reaction

When asked about receiving the award, Jesse shared:

“Receiving this award was unexpected. I’m sure there were many deserving nominees. I am grateful for the recognition and appreciation that accompanies this award.”

On what inspired him to become a paramedic:

“Working as an EMT, I ran many incidents with phenomenal, advanced providers. I loved being an EMT and wanted to expand my skillset to further help those in need. I still love what I do to this day, providing a sense of relief to those in need during their darkest hours.”

A Celebration of Service

As part of the celebration, Penn East also catered lunch for Jesse and 60 of his fellow first responders at PA Ambulance to show appreciation for all who serve. This gesture was a way of honoring not just Jesse, but all first responders who dedicate their lives to helping others.

To all first responders we appreciate you

This award honors the legacy of Milinda and Gus Catalano, whose passion for service continues to inspire us. Milinda was known for her kindness and her signature phrase, “I appreciate you.” Through this award, we ensure first responders hear that same message from Penn East: We appreciate you.

Final Thoughts

Jesse Young’s unwavering commitment to his community and his fellow first responders embodies everything the Milinda Project First Responder Award stands for. We are proud to recognize his contributions and extend our gratitude to all first responders who dedicate their lives to helping others.

Stay tuned for next year as Penn East FCU continues to honor local heroes through the Milinda Project!
