In April 2024, Penn East Federal Credit Union launched the Milinda Project, a fundraising initiative in honor of Milinda Catalano, a beloved employee who passed away unexpectedly in February 2024. This project aims to support two causes close to Milinda’s heart: animal rescue and first responders.
Milinda Catalano, who worked in the Call Center, was known for her boundless positivity and kindness. At only 34 years old, her sudden passing was a tremendous loss to the Penn East FCU family and the broader community. Milinda was celebrated for her unwavering cheerfulness, often brightening her colleagues’ days with her radiant smile and the heartfelt phrase, “I APPRECIATE YOU!”
Following her passing, Penn East FCU’s CEO, Marie Beggin, felt compelled to honor Milinda’s memory in a meaningful way. “Milinda was a huge inspiration to me and shaped the kind of CEO I aspire to be,” said Beggin. “Her legacy taught me that leadership can be full of empathy, compassion, and kindness, as well as daily appreciation.”
The Milinda Project focuses on supporting local “no-kill” animal shelters and recognizing first responders. Milinda cherished her pets, Shamrock and Clover, and deeply loved her husband, Gus, a first responder who also passed away recently.
The first fundraising initiative in honor of the Milinda Project, is to raise funds to support local “no-kill” shelters in our community footprint.
People helping people is the credit union way and The CrossState Credit Union Association exemplifies this core value. After launching the Milinda project, the CrossState Association made a generous donation to the initiative.
With employee efforts, Penn East’s donation, and a generous donation from the CrossState Credit Union Association, Penn East was able to raise $4,000 for local “no-kill” animal shelters in need.
AED Dedication
Additionally, Penn East has now installed fully functional AED machines at all branch locations, each accompanied by a dedication plaque in Milinda’s memory. These devices stand as a testament to her spirit, supporting the safety and well-being of all members and employees.
First Responder Award
To continue honoring Milinda’s legacy, the Milinda Project will next recognize first responders in our communities. The Milinda Project First Responder Award will award $2,500 to a local first responder, celebrating their dedication to community service—just as Milinda’s husband, Gus, exemplified in his role as a Paramedic. This award launches on December 2, 2024, and we invite the public to nominate a local first responder. Click here for more details.
Milinda’s phrase “I APPRECIATE YOU” continues to resonate daily at Penn East FCU, reminding us of her enduring positivity and gratitude.
